The History of the Leavenworth Bicycle Club
The Leavenworth Bicycle Club, Inc. was founded in September 1985 to serve the Leavenworth, Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, and surrounding area.

There have been Bicycle Clubs off and on in Leavenworth since the 1880’s. The present club was formed when the Fort Leavenworth Cycling Club and a new Leavenworth Bicycle Club merged in early September 1985.

The first ride schedule was printed in October 1985, and the club’s newsletter, the Buffalo Tales, first published in January 1986. The club took over the Buffalo Bill Century from Larry Wise and Biringer’s Bicycle Shop, who had organized the ride for three years, in September 1986.

Next years 17th Annual Buffalo Bill Century is scheduled for Sunday, September 26, 1999 and is now one of the rides on the Kansas Survival Series. Participants of the Kansas Survival Series are eligible to buy a distinctive cycling jersey for participating in three of the five events in 1999.

The club is continuing to grow in membership and expand it’s activities to meet the desires of all the members. Members of the club have participated in triathlons, cross state tours, bed and breakfast weekends, and supported or self contained camping tours. Most of the year we feature several rides every weekend. There are also week nights rides, Thursday morning Women’s rides, picnics, cycle camping trips, trips to the KATY Trail in Missouri, the annual Buffalo Bill Century, and trips to other communities for events such as the “Rope Em’ Ride” in Hays, Octoginta, Biking Across Kansas, and MS 150 Rides. Winter activities include road rides, trail riding on mountain bikes, hiking, cross country skiing, camping trips, pot luck suppers, progressive dinners, and an annual Christmas party.
The club’s monthly meetings feature bike repair clinics, equipment demonstrations, speakers from the local area bicycle shops, fitness and training orientations, and the clubs annual Business Meeting and Pot Luck Dinner in November.

We have designed a club logo and a distinctive club jersey which members can buy at cost. Our list of sponsors is also growing: most local area bicycle shops and sporting goods stores offer all members five to ten percent discounts on equipment, clothing, and accessories. We are looking forward to the future when we hope to increase the scope and activities of the club. Members are encouraged to provide suggestions so we can expand current events to encompass everyone’s desires and interests.

Individual and family memberships are $15.00 per year. Membership includes 5 issues of the Buffalo Tales Newsletter and Ride Schedule per year. Other benefits include discounts at 19 Bicycle and Sports shops in the Leavenworth, Kansas City, Johnson County, Lawrence, and Topeka areas. The Leavenworth Bicycle Club is a club affiliate of the League of American Bicyclists and Adventure Cycling Association.
